Influenza Deaths in Alberta in 1918
“The deaths number 7,924, an increase of 3,877 over the total for last year. This increase can be almost wholly attributed to the Influenza epidemic which became prevalent during the last three months of the year, the number of deaths from this cause being 3,259. Of this number 2,151 occurred during the month of Novermber; and 1,634 persons died between the ages of 25 and 44, which was the most susceptible period. … The number of males who succumbed to the disease was 1,989, whilst the females numbered 1,270.” Donald Mackie, Acting Deputy Registrar General in the Annual Report of the Vital Statistics Branch, Department of Municipal Affairs, Province of Alberta, 1918.
